The Solution: Faster and Cheaper Delivery
Client: An American startup that's developing a logistics platform to reduce agricultural product waste.
The Challenge
There are two main challenges to effectively using these items with cosmetic imperfections:
1) Finding new uses: Identifying new markets for them, like in the cosmetics or animal feed industries.
2) Structuring the supply chain: Building a logistics network that minimizes transportation costs between producers and factories. This involves considering different types of vehicles, opportunities to consolidate shipments, and the need for frequent replanning.
The Objective
Develop a computational system capable of dynamically optimizing the logistics operation connected to the platform.
The Solution
Mip Wise developed a solution that determines the most efficient way to meet each customer's demand given the product availability of each producer over several days. The system's output is a detailed logistics plan, with a complete route for each vehicle, including the departure date and time for each leg.
In addition to supply and demand information, the solution considers:
The availability of vehicles, some from carriers and others from the producers themselves.
Refrigeration restrictions and the transportation of different types of items.
Opportunities for backhauls (reverse loading) to maximize fleet utilization.
Results
While the web platform is being developed by another team, the logistics solution developed by Mip Wise has been validated with real and synthetic data.
Simulations show that the system consistently prescribes more efficient plans than an experienced planner could achieve using only spreadsheets.
In addition to reducing transportation costs, Mip Wise's solution also increases the amount of demand that can be met and reduces carbon emissions.
In 2025, the solution was granted a patent in the United States.
